Maharashtra has officially become the first and only Indian state to register over 50,000 housing projects under the Real Estate Regulatory Authority (RERA). As MahaRERA completes 8 years and enters its 9th, it stands as the country’s most active and expansive RERA authority, accounting for more than one-third (35%) of all housing projects registered in India.

According to data from the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, India currently has 1,44,617 housing projects registered with various RERA bodies. Here’s how other major states compare:

  • Maharashtra (MahaRERA): 50,162
  • Tamil Nadu (TNRERA): 27,609
  • Gujarat (GUJRERA): 15,322
  • Uttar Pradesh (UPRERA): ~10,000+
  • Karnataka (KRERA): ~9,700+
  • Madhya Pradesh (MPRERA): ~8,500+

These numbers reflect Maharashtra’s massive lead, registering nearly double the number of housing projects as Tamil Nadu, and over three times that of Gujarat.

MahaRERA’s Role and Vision:

MahaRERA, launched in 2017 under the RERA Act of 2016, was one of India’s first real estate regulatory authorities and has led the way in transparency and enforcement.

Chairman Manoj Saunik noted:

“This is a milestone moment for Maharashtra’s ever-progressing real estate sector. Projects were earlier concentrated in the MMR and Pune region, but now demand and registrations are rising across all regions. MahaRERA continues to legally empower homebuyers while maintaining a grievance-free environment.”

This development cements Maharashtra’s position as the undisputed leader in organized housing development in India and underlines the state’s commitment to growth, governance, and housing accessibility.
