]]> The Mumbai Housing and Area Development Board, a unit of MHADA, has cleared unauthorized structures and taken possession of eight acres of land in Juhu-Andheri. This action follows the Bombay High Court’s decision to deny a stay on the removal of illegal encroachments.

The land was originally designated for a Slum Rehabilitation Scheme under Loknayak Nagar Co-operative Housing Society, Shivajinagar Co-operative Housing Society, and New Kapaswadi Co-operative Housing Society. A joint survey identified 32,913 square meters of land that was not eligible for rehabilitation. MHADA instructed the Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) to exclude this portion from the project, and the No Objection Certificate (NOC) for the scheme was put on hold.

Despite ongoing litigation, Bombay Slum Development Corporation Private Limited erected iron sheds on the disputed land. Complaints regarding the encroachment were received by the MHADA Mumbai Board, leading to action to clear the unauthorized structures.

On February 25, 2025, the Bombay High Court refused to grant a stay on the demolition. Following this decision, the Mumbai Board carried out a clearance operation and reclaimed the land.

The operation was led by MHADA’s Vice President and CEO and was executed by the encroachment removal unit of the Mumbai Board under directives from the Mumbai Board Chief Officer. The clearance drive was supervised by officials from the engineering department.

]]> CIDCO (City and Industrial Development Corporation) has made significant strides in addressing unauthorized constructions across Navi Mumbai and NAINA areas in 2024. The organization demolished 2,102 structures, reclaiming a total of 2,06,431 square meters of land, following a series of demolition drives. The actions were taken under the guidance of the CIDCO leadership and its Controller of Unauthorized Constructions (CUC) team.

In total, CIDCO conducted 547 demolition drives over the year, targeting various types of unauthorized developments, including temporary structures, RCC buildings, and illegal stalls. Prior to the demolitions, CIDCO issued notices to 2,160 property owners, informing them of the impending action under the Maharashtra Regional and Town Planning (MRTP) Act.

The demolitions were carried out with the support of Navi Mumbai Police, ensuring law and order during these operations. CIDCO’s ongoing efforts to remove encroachments come as part of its broader mission to prevent disruptions to the city’s urban planning. The reclaimed land is expected to aid in the development of key infrastructure projects, including the Navi Mumbai International Airport, Atal Setu (MTHL), Ulwe Coastal Road, Navi Mumbai Metro, and various housing schemes.

CIDCO has also been actively publishing notices in newspapers to warn residents about illegal constructions and is advising potential buyers in the region to verify property documents carefully to avoid financial risks related to unauthorized buildings.

The demolition drives are seen as a necessary step in safeguarding the city’s development, ensuring that encroachments do not obstruct planned infrastructure and urban growth.
