In a significant move capitalizing on the soaring national pride following the Indian women’s cricket team’s historic ICC Women’s World Cup 2025 triumph, the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) has formally requested the Maharashtra government to allot a plot of land for a dedicated Residential Women’s Cricket Academy.

The request, dated November 7, 2025, and addressed to the Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, highlights the need for a centralized, state-of-the-art facility to nurture the next generation of female cricketers.

🇮🇳 Context: A World Cup Win Fuels the Demand

The backdrop to this proposal is the monumental victory of the ‘Women in Blue’ just days earlier. On Sunday, November 2, 2025, Harmanpreet Kaur and her team defeated South Africa in a thrilling final at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai to lift India’s first-ever Women’s World Cup title.

This historic achievement has been hailed as a potential watershed moment for women’s cricket in India, sparking widespread celebration, an unprecedented financial windfall for the players, and a massive surge in interest and support for the women’s game. The MCA’s swift action is seen as a direct response to this momentum, aiming to provide institutional support to sustain and build upon the national team’s success.

Following India's historic ICC Women's World Cup 2025 victory, the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) has urgently requested a plot of land from Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis for a dedicated, non-profit Residential Women's Cricket Academy in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.

🎯 Centralised Training to End Logistical Hurdles

In the letter, signed by MCA President Ajinkya Naik, the association detailed the urgent need for a dedicated residential facility in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).

Key Justifications for the Academy:

  • Solving Travel Woes: The letter notes that at present, women players often have to travel long distances across the city and suburbs for regular practice sessions, leading to “fatigue, time loss, and logistical challenges,” especially for players from distant areas.
  • Centralised Excellence: The proposed academy would provide a centralized training and accommodation facility, allowing players to focus better on their game and overall development without the burden of challenging commutes.
  • Comprehensive Infrastructure: The proposed Dedicated Residential Women’s Cricket Academy would serve as a “centre of excellence” offering:
    • Turf grounds and indoor practice areas.
    • Residential accommodation.
    • A gymnasium, physiotherapy, and sports medicine support.
    • Classrooms for academic and life-skill development.

🤝 A Landmark Public-Private Initiative

The MCA has positioned the proposed academy as a non-profit venture, stating, “The MCA is fully prepared to invest in the development of the facility and manage its operations on a non-for-profit basis.”

President Naik concluded the appeal by stressing the potential transformative impact, saying the project would “become a landmark initiative that strengthens Maharashtra’s leadership in promoting women’s sports and creates a lasting legacy for generations to come.” The request awaits a decision from Chief Minister Fadnavis and the State Government.
