Realty gives background at the open

Property shares started Wednesday on the back foot, unwinding some of the strength they showed on Tuesday, when realty gained about 2% while the benchmark indices ended flat. Dalal Street opened lower and the slide deepened within minutes. The Sensex opened 345 points down at 73,253 and was off more than 600 points by 9:15 AM, near 72,995. The Nifty opened at 22,678 and fell to 22,566 early, down 0.81%.

The selling was broad. Every sectoral index traded in the red except auto, and realty was among them. IT led the losses, down more than 3%, followed by FMCG, down about 1.5%. Financial services, media, metal, pharma and PSU bank indices also traded lower. By late morning the Nifty was down about 1% at 22,528 and the Sensex had cracked nearly 900 points.

Where the sector stands

Realty enters the session after a bounce that has not changed its bigger picture. The Nifty Realty index was last confirmed near 800 on October 21, close to its October 8 closing low of 796.60 and well below the 52-week high of 974.50. A sustained break below 796.60 would be a fresh warning sign.

What to look for through the day

The Nifty’s immediate support is 22,500, and analysts warn that a break could take it towards 22,300. Resistance sits at 22,850 to 22,900. Realty tends to follow the market’s direction in the afternoon, so watch whether Tuesday’s 2% gain holds or fades. Heavy volumes on a down day would point to fresh exits rather than routine profit-taking. Midcaps fell less than the benchmarks and smallcaps were nearly flat, which is a small positive.

What is moving the sector

  • Crude oil: Prices near $116 a barrel fuel inflation fears and push up the odds of tighter borrowing conditions.
  • Foreign selling: Persistent selling by foreign portfolio investors keeps pressure on rate-sensitive sectors.
  • Geopolitics: Escalating US-Iran tensions are hurting risk appetite.
  • US Fed: Investors are cautious ahead of the Federal Reserve’s decision.
  • Earnings: Results have been mixed. DLF posted 11% profit growth, while Godrej Properties’ profit fell 62% even as its collections hit a record.

What to wait for

  • US Fed decision: The announcement later today will set the tone for global yields and risk appetite.
  • More Q2 results: Dates for Lodha, Prestige, Brigade and others are unconfirmed, with November 14 the last day to report.
  • Festive demand: Launch and booking data before Diwali will show whether buyers are returning after a 21% drop in April to June bookings.
  • Next RBI meeting: It is scheduled for December 2 to 4.

The outlook

Realty needs steadier crude and calmer global markets to hold its recent bounce. Developers with strong launch pipelines and cash collections should be better placed, but near-term moves will follow oil and the Fed rather than company news.
