Slum redevelopment projects will now have primary health care centre, it will be free of FSI. This will be mandatory and the area would be between 1,000-5,000 sq ft.

Mumbai city has one of the highest number of COVID 19 positive patients in the country. There are many cases that are coming out of slums too.

Dharavi is one such example, which had put the state administration into a tizzy after the Coronavirus found a foothold there.

However, now on all slum redevelopment projects will have a primary healthcare centre. It has been made mandatory.

Maharashtra’s housing minister Jitendra Awhad, took to social microblogging website to announce this decision.

He said, “Henceforth all Slum Rehabilitation Project to take care of slum dwellers will have a primary health care centre ad measuring 1,000-5,000 sq ft. It will be free of FSI basis.”

SRA’s Chief Executive Officer, Satish Lokhande confirmed the development and said he has already begun the process.

Meanwhile developers think this is a good move and welcomed it too.

Tejas Vyas, CREDA-MCHI committee member said, “This is positive move, this was the need of the hour keeping in mind the current situation. These healthcare centers will be helpful in situations that we are facing today and if any such issue arises in future.”

Being free of FSI, this healthcare centre centre will not be a burden to the developers as well. Developers normally construct a community hall for slum dwellers in every projects.

Having a healthcare centre within the project would mean better access to a doctor for slum dwellers.

In April Ratan Tata had come heavily on developers for constructing vertical slums in the name of slum redevelopment.

He had said, “Slums are the residue; we’re building a vertical slum. For the first time, the close proximity, low value structures that we have built are the cause of new problems.”
