Mumbai is set to witness a transformative shift in its rail infrastructure, with twelve major projects currently underway. Announced by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw via X, these initiatives aim to enhance connectivity, reduce congestion, and improve both local and suburban train services across the city. Here’s a comprehensive overview of these pivotal rail developments:

  1. New 5th & 6th Line: CSMT to Kurla
  • Objective: To streamline local and mail/express train operations by segregating tracks, thus improving efficiency.
  • Status: The first phase, covering the 10 km stretch from Parel to Kurla, is expected to be completed by the end of next year.
  1. 6th Rail Line: Mumbai Central to Borivali
  • Objective: To boost connectivity and ease traffic congestion along this busy route.
  • Status: The 8.9 km stretch from Khar to Goregaon has been completed and commissioned. Work on the Goregaon to Borivali section is progressing rapidly.
  1. Harbour Line Extension: Goregaon-Borivali
  • Objective: To alleviate congestion in the Andheri-Borivali section.
  • Status: Land acquisition for the extension is currently underway.
  1. 5th & 6th Lines: Borivali-Virar
  • Objective: To alleviate congestion on the Borivali-Palghar fast corridor by adding additional lines.
  • Status: Utility shifting work is in progress.
  1. Virar-Dahanu Road Quadrupling
  • Objective: To enhance rail connectivity and reduce congestion in the region.
  • Status: Earthwork and bridge construction are currently underway.
  1. Panvel-Karjat Rail Line
  • Objective: To create a new suburban corridor connecting Navi Mumbai with Raigad, improving access to untapped areas of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
  • Status: Tunnelling and bridge construction are in progress.
  1. Airoli-Kalwa Elevated Link
  • Objective: To establish a seamless train connection between Vashi-Belapur and Kalyan.
  • Status: The first phase, including the Dighagaon station, has been commissioned. Land acquisition for the remaining sections is ongoing.
  1. 4th Line: Kalyan-Asangaon
  • Objective: To boost local train connectivity within the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).
  • Status: Land acquisition is currently in progress.
  1. 3rd & 4th Lines: Kalyan-Badlapur
  • Objective: To expedite train services and increase local train frequency.
  • Status: Ongoing work includes utility shifting, earthwork, and bridge construction.
  1. Kalyan-Kasara 3rd Line
    • Objective: To reduce congestion and improve mobility on the Kalyan-Kasara route.
    • Status: Phase 1, from Asangaon to Kasara, is expected to be completed by next year.
  2. Naigaon-Juichandra Double Chord Line
    • Objective: To eliminate engine reversal at Vasai for Konkan Railway trains, thereby saving time.
    • Status: The project is currently under construction.
  3. Chord Line: Nilaje to Kopar
    • Objective: To shorten travel time between Vasai and Panvel by 15 to 20 minutes.
    • Status: Construction is in progress.

These twelve projects are set to significantly enhance Mumbai’s rail network, addressing longstanding congestion issues and improving travel efficiency throughout the region.
