Yes heard it right come May 2022 one has to qualify an exam to become a Real Estate Agent. All real estate agents desirous of registering with MahaRERA should have Certification.

In the first meeting of committee for capacity building and certification of real estate agents in Maharashtra it was decided that there is a need, keeping in mind the important role which real estate agents play in sector, for introducing training and certification for Real Estate Agents.

The meeting that was held last week was chaired by Gautam Chatterjee, Founder Chairman, MahaRERA and included members from various builders and real estate agent associations.

In the online video conferencing meeting the committee discussed and agreed that from 1st May 2022, all Real Estate Agents desirous of registering with MahaRERA should have the Certification.

All Real estate agents who are already registered with the authority, shall need to undertake the certification for renewal of their Registration.

The Real Estate Agent Associations suggested that the certificate should have limited validity as the regulatory framework is dynamic and evolving.

The Real Estate Agents should undertake refresher course every 5 years, learning the change in regulatory framework from time to time.

Chairman of the Committee presented the Discussion Paper and requested all the committee members to provide their suggestions on the same within 5 days., before Thursday April 22.

The discussion paper contained legal basis for making certification mandatory, who all needed training and certification, draft syllabus/curriculum, Empaneling Educational Institutions/Training Institutions and MahaRERA appointing an expert agency to conduct centralized on-line examination.

Promoter Industry Associations which are empaneled as SROs and Real Estate Agent Industry Association, both being members of this committee, may be considered for empanelment for imparting training, either through their own training body or any related Educational/Training Institution nominated by them.

There shall be an examination which shall be a qualifying examination. On passing, the candidate shall be eligible for MahaRERA certificate which will be a mandatory requirement for Registration/Renewal.

The next meeting is scheduled on April 23, 2021.

A real estate agent association member of the committee said, “The details of the examination are being discussed upon right now. Most likely it will be in a multiple choice format, it shall be in multiple languages and also a simple one so that even the seniors and the veterans in the industry do not face any hassles while appearing the exams.”

In Maharashtra there are a total of 29029 real estate agents whom registration has been granted by MahaRERA.
