This would be second Ambedkar memorial within Central Mumbai. A grand Ambedkar memorial is sanctioned by the state at Indu Mill Compound at Shivaji Park.

Dr B R Ambedkar memorial is all set to come up at the BIT chawl house in Parel. This memorial would come at the place where the father of the Indian Constituion stayed. At the same a memorail for Annabhau Sathe is to come up at Chirag Nagar in Ghatkopar.

The current residents of both the homes that is the BIT chawl and Chirag Nagar in Ghatkopar shall be rehabilitated by the state government.

Rooms 50 and 51, on the second floor of BIT Chawl No 1, at Parel, is where Dr Ambedkar resided from 1912 to 1934. According to reports Room 50 was his study while 51 was his residence. He stayed here with his wife Ramabai and even published the fortnightly Bahishrkit Bharat and MookNayak newspapers.

The announcement was made by Dr Jitendra Awhad the housing minister and both the projects shall be undertaken by the housing ministry. He made the announcedmentduring his maiden visit to MHADA headquarters in Kalanagar, Bandra.

The other memorial of Dr Ambedkar is coming up at Indu Mill, at Shivaji Park, which is spread over 12 acre of land. The total project cost for the Indu Mill memorial is close to Rs 700 crore and MMRDA is the authority that will be carrying out the project.

Awhad after holding meetings with various officials of MHADA briefed the press. For the issue of houses of the common man. Awhad stated that the government is trying its best to bring in Foreign Direct Investment (FDI). This FDI shall be used for the redevelopment of the MHADA layout which will generate housing stock. This housing stock shall be sold by MHADA to common people via lottery.

MHADA which was recenly appointed the planning authority for its layouts has been clearing files related to the development within 45 days. MHADA via a computerised system has begun offering online, No Obejction Certificate for the redevelopment of its layout, Ocupation Certificate, Commencement Certificate and other required clearances.
