The Government of India has announced a significant measure to uplift the urban poor by increasing the income slab of Economically Weaker Section (EWS) category in the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana–Urban (PMAY-U)  from Rs three lakh to Rs Six lakhs for the housing schemes under AHP vertical in MMR. 

The decision has been effected in response to the letter by the government of Maharashtra requesting the union government to enhance the income criterion of EWS category from Rs three lakh to Rs six Lakh for affordable Housing in partnership ( AHP ) vertical of PMAY-U projects in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). The decision will facilitate the needy homeless in urban areas. The enhancement in income slab aims to expand the eligibility and accessibility of affordable housing for individuals belonging to the EWS category. Also maximum people in EWS category can avail the benefit of MHADA housing Lottery in MMR.

Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojna  (Urban ) was started by the housing and poverty Alleviation ministry at the centre. Under the affordable housing in partnership (AHP), the Central Government provides the subsidy of Rs. 1.5 lakh per dwelling unit. The AHP vertical approves the housing projects with a minimum of 250 houses and of which at least 35% houses are reserved for the EWS category.
