The Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) held its 14th Lokshahi Din (Democracy Day) today at the Grihanirman Bhavan in Bandra East. The event, chaired by MHADA Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Sanjeev Jaiswal (I.A.S.), resulted in a swift and decisive action on nine citizen applications, underlining the authority’s commitment to transparency and justice.

Prompt Justice in Vikhroli Tenement Dispute

The most significant action came in response to an application by Sunita Cheulkar. The case involved a transit tenement in a MHADA camp at Kannamwar Nagar, Vikhroli, originally held in her mother’s name.

The tenement was being occupied by Cheulkar’s deceased younger sister’s husband. The applicant stated that her brother-in-law had since remarried and was continuing to illegally occupy the transit accommodation. Cheulkar sought the transfer of the tenement to her name.

Demonstrating a commitment to prompt resolution, CEO Jaiswal issued stringent directives to the concerned officials of the Mumbai Building Repairs and Reconstruction Board:

  • Eviction Notice: Officials must serve a notice to vacate the premises within 24 hours.
  • Immediate Action: The tenement must be immediately cleared through eviction proceedings with police protection.
  • Diwali Deadline: The officials were explicitly instructed to hand over possession of the transit tenement to Sunita Cheulkar before the festival of Diwali.

Resolving Pending Possession and Dues

In another application filed by Swapnil Nikam, the Vice Chairman and CEO Jaiswal adopted a balanced approach. He instructed the relevant Mumbai Building Repairs and Reconstruction Board officials to take an undertaking from Nikam. Following the recovery of all outstanding rent dues, the officials were then directed to hand over possession of the transit tenement to him.

Praise for Timely Administrative Action

The Lokshahi Din also highlighted an instance of prompt action by a staff member. During the hearing of Shaila Khandare’s application regarding the inclusion of her mother’s name in Appendix Two for a slum rehabilitation project in Andheri, it was noted that the Land Manager of the Mumbai Board, Redekar, had already scheduled a separate hearing for the case on October 14, 2025. Jaiswal expressed satisfaction with Redekar’s timeliness and diligence in addressing the application even before the formal Lokshahi Din hearing.

The 14th Lokshahi Din successfully heard nine total applications, distributed across MHADA’s operational divisions:

  • Mumbai Building Repairs and Reconstruction Board: 4
