Mumbai city has close to 16,000 cessed buildings and all of them are in South of the city. Every year MHADA’s Repair and Reconstruction board carries out a survey.

This survey is carried out before monsoon and a list of most dangerous buildings is declared by MHADA.

The survey is carried out a few months before monsoon and by mid May or towards the end of the May the list is declared.

Residents of buildings declared as most dangerous to reside, are shifted to transit accommodation.

However, this year, as the lockdown came into force in March and has been extended till May 17 thus the survey got hampered.

Satish Lokhande, Chief Officer, Repair and Reconstruction Board confirmed that. But he also assured that everything is taken care of and there’s no need to worry.

“Our engineers are available 24 hours. We even came out with a public notice in newspapers informing people with mobile numbers of concerned officials. These numbers can be contacted by residents of such building whenever they feel there’s a danger,” said Lokhande.

The call centre of MHADA is working non stop, and whenever MHADA receives a call the staff attends and fixes the problem.

For example, recently MHADA received a call from a building in Dadar west. One of the apartments on the third floor of the building named Ambulkar Sadan had some problem.

A small portion of the ceiling cover came down. Post which MHADA officials were asked to fix it. They were asked to get rid of the loose portions carry out propping and other steps were taken.

Lokhande also said that, the officials keep visiting the buildings and hence have a fair idea of dilapidated buildings. He has made a separate WhatsApp group of engineers who have been asked to be available throughout.

Any building which the authorities find needs repair and needs to be vacated, action will be taken accordingly. Regular repair is being carried out of buildings that are in need of repair.

The authorities say people wherever required will be shifted to transit accommodation too.

Every year buildings collapse in Mumbai and kill scores of people. Most of these buildings that come down like a pack of cards are cessed buildings. They are very old most of them close to a hundred years old.
