In a significant move to streamline land administration and enhance transparency, the Government of Maharashtra has announced the formation of a high-level committee dedicated to the modernization and updating of the Land Records Department. According to the Government Resolution (GR) issued on January 5, 2026, the committee will be chaired by the State’s Chief Secretary.

The primary objective of this initiative is to overhaul the systems managing essential citizen documents, such as the 7/12 extract, Property Cards (Milkat Patrika), and land maps. By leveraging digital technology, the government aims to ensure these records are updated in real-time and remain easily accessible to the public, reducing the need for physical visits to government offices.

The committee will oversee several key digital projects, including the implementation of “AgriStack”—a digital ecosystem for agriculture—and the expansion of digital mapping across all municipal councils in the state. “The goal is to ensure that land-related services are transparent, error-free, and supportive of the ‘Ease of Living’ for every citizen,” the resolution stated.

The committee consists of top officials, including Additional Chief Secretaries from the Finance, Revenue, Agriculture, and IT departments. To ensure steady progress, the panel is mandated to meet every month to review the status of digitization and address any technical or administrative bottlenecks.

This modernization drive is expected to significantly reduce land-related disputes and provide a more secure environment for property transactions across Maharashtra.
