BMC commissioner Praveen Pardeshi on Tuesday came out with an order for taking over vacant residential buildings, lodges and hotels.

The order is for requisitioning of empty residential buildings, lodges, hotels, dharmashalas, clubs, exhibition centers, colleges, hostels, dormitories, residential cruise ships, marriage halls, gymkhanas, banquet halls, institutions with immediate effect.

These vacant rooms will be used for quarantining of persons who were in contact with a positive Covid-19 patient and are not symptomatic.

The BMC commissioner in his order has stated, that he found that the high risk and low risk people who came in contact with positive Covid-19 patients in some particular buildings, areas and localities are living in very small houses or very dense houses and are using common sanitation facilities and thereby are vulnerable to get infected.

Hence, the BMC feels the need to shift people from such places to avoid the spread of the virus.

BMC in the order also says that there are many places in possession of private parties that are lying vacant due to current lockdown.

The BMC Assistant commissioners of wards have been authorized to requisition the vacant rooms.

People to be kept in quarantine in these places will be provided food and basic arrangements will be made.

The BMC commissioner will issue separate order for payments to owners of such places for the use and foo supply at appropriate rates,.

Not only this, if any persons refuses to comply with the order of the BMC commissioner, the assistant commissioner shall initiate action action under section 188 of IPC.

The Senior Police Inspector will provide legal help for implementation of the order.

In Mumbai Metropolitan Region there are close to 2.10 lakh housing units that are unsold, of which close to 50-60% would be in Mumbai limits.
