Dharavi Redevelopment may be stuck, but amidst all the bad news, here’s some good news for the residents of Dharavi’s sector V.

672 tenements with all amenities shall be completed by MHADA and be ready by January end.

A senior MHADA official confirmed that 660 tenements for residential and 12 shops have been constructed.

“Except water supply system and sewerage system works all remaining work carried out. These tenements will be completed by January end. All permissions received from MCGM,” said the officer.

MHADA was appointed as the authority to redevelop Dharavi’s sector V, in May 2011. And it has since constructed 358 homes, each 300 sq ft, to rehabilitate slum dwellers.

Currently 672 tenements have been constructed by MHADA in Dharavi and by January end these will be completed.

These tenements will be handed over, after receipt of annexure II from DRP (Dharavi Redevelopment Project) /SRA (Slum Rehabilitation Authority). Annexure II consists a list of eligible slum dwellers who will be the beneficiaries of these homes.

The state government in 2018, had decided to redevelop all five sectors of Dharavi together as one, via a special purpose vehicle (SPV).

Post which tenders were floated for redevelopment of Dharavi, but then in August 2020, Committee of Secretaries (CoS) suggested to float fresh tenders.

The CoS relied its suggestion on the advice by the Advocate General (AG), who advised for fresh tenders.

The 2018 decision of all sectors being redeveloped by an SPV had produced a dilemma for MHADA, that was developing sector V.

But according to senior officials, they have received all permissions and these homes are almost completed too.

These homes will now be given out to the slum dwellers eligible for them within Dharavi. This particular sector that MHADA is redeveloping is close to commercial hub of Bandra Kurla Complex.
